Set Description

Specially defensive Tyranitar is one of the better tanks in the metagame with its sand-boosted special bulk, status options, and deep offensive movepool. Stealth Rock allows Tyranitar to take advantage of the switches it forces to set up entry hazards, which has fantastic synergy with Tyranitar's ability to threaten some of the best Defoggers in the tier, such as Tornadus-T and Zapdos. Rock Blast is preferred over Stone Edge due to its higher accuracy and multi-hit nature, allowing it to break past Substitute from Pokemon like Volcarona and Arctozolt. Earthquake gives Tyranitar fantastic coverage, allowing it to hit Steel-types like Melmetal and Heatran that can shrug off Rock Blast. Crunch can be run over Earthquake if Tyranitar prefers to threaten Ghost- and Psychic-types like Dragapult, Mew, and Slowbro. Thunder Wave and Toxic are both viable options for the final moveslot. Outside of slowing down fast threats like Dragapult and Kartana, Thunder Wave can greatly annoy switch-ins like Corviknight and Ferrothorn as they do not appreciate potentially being immobilized by paralysis. Toxic can put switch-ins like Buzzwole and Rotom-W on a timer, allowing Tyranitar to break past them in the long run. The given EV spread allows Tyranitar to live Triple Axel from Weavile after a Swords Dance boost and OHKO specially defensive Heatran with Earthquake and Dragapult with Crunch while maximizing special bulk.

Team Options

Specially defensive Tyranitar is a great fit on teams looking for a special wall that can force progress by setting up entry hazards and spreading status. Slowbro is a wonderful defensive partner: it is a sturdy check to Water-, Fighting, and Ground-type Pokemon that threaten Tyranitar, such as Urshifu-R, Buzzwole, and Garchomp. In return, Tyranitar stonewalls Ghost-types like Dragapult and Blacephalon that Slowbro is terrified of and is one of the tier's better checks to Volcarona, which can set up on Slowbro. Flying-types Tornadus-T and Zapdos can help out against Fighting- and Ground-types like Galarian Zapdos and Landorus-T while shielding Tyranitar from Grass-types like Rillaboom and Kartana. Tornadus-T also appreciates Tyranitar threatening one of its best checks in Zapdos. Ferrothorn forms a potent hazard stacking core with Tyranitar, as Spikes greatly pressures Tyranitar's grounded switch-ins like Buzzwole and Tapu Fini. Moreover, Ferrothorn can take on Fairy-types like Tapu Fini and Tapu Lele, while Tyranitar can chase out Fire-types that obliterate Ferrothorn, such as Heatran and Volcarona. Offensive partners that can take advantage of Tyranitar's Stealth Rock also make for great teammates. Dragapult likes Stealth Rock wearing down switch-ins like Heatran, Landorus-T, and Tapu Fini, and is immune to Body Press from Tyranitar's greatest checks in Skarmory and Corviknight, allowing it to freely switch into them before forcing them out. Kartana is a notable offensive partner as it also shares checks with Tyranitar: outside of appreciating Stealth Rock chipping away at Buzzwole, Skarmory, and Corviknight, it loves Tyranitar potentially rendering Skarmory and Corviknight immobile with Thunder Wave and putting Buzzwole on a timer with Toxic. Tyranitar can also pressure Flying-types like Zapdos and Tornadus-T for Kartana, and Kartana can remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Zapdos and Tornadus-T, making them vulnerable to Tyranitar's Stealth Rock. Finally, Excadrill has fantastic synergy with Tyranitar: Sand Rush allows it to be one of the best late-game sweepers in the tier when sand is active; it can pressure Fairy-types like Tapu Lele and Tapu Koko; and appreciates Tyranitar paralyzing shared checks like Corviknight and Skarmory so it can threaten to break through them with Iron Head or Rock Slide.

Specially defensive Tyranitar is a great fit on teams looking for a special wall that can force progress by setting up entry hazards and spreading status. Slowbro is a wonderful defensive partner: it is a sturdy check to Water-, Fighting, and Ground-type Pokemon that threaten Tyranitar, such as Barraskewda, Urshifu-R, Buzzwole, and Garchomp. could cut barra bc it’s the worst example and sentence getting long In return, Tyranitar stonewalls Ghost-types like Dragapult and Blacephalon that Slowbro is terrified of and is one of the tier's sturdier checks don’t like the adjective sturdy, maybe “better”? or “few” to Volcarona, which can set up on Slowbro.
